Time to embrace the decades of dance! Arabesque, drop, krump, rumba, shuffle, twerk, whine - you name it we will work you up into a frenzy with some calorie-busting moves. We sent friend and member Sophie Lam into the dance mix to see if she could get those hips shaking. "I don’t remember the last time I had this much fun in a class!" she says.
Over the last six months, I’ve really thrown myself into some serious weight training. Now, it was time to have some fun, let loose and get back into the groove with some serious hip-shaking, I was going to try A-Z dance - every session has several dance styles mashed up into one routine. I’d consider myself lucky if I could master one dance style but for this session - two?! This was going to be a serious workout challenge.
Our instructor (with Ricky Martin’esque hips that had me a bit distracted) decided to teach us dancehall ragga and then throw in some hip hop street moves. So no, I would not be able to get away with doing the two-step all the way through. I was going to have to relax, feel the music, go low, swing my hips like there was no tomorrow and remember the entire mashup dance sequence.
And to my surprise, I wasn’t as bad as I thought I would be. I won’t lie, remembering the steps and coordinating my moves to the tunes was not easy but after a bit of practice, I was able to do the whole sequence with a few minor stumbles here and there. On top of that, I went from dancehall ragga straight into some hip hop moves, my street cred was going through the roof!
What’s more, dancing this much really brought me out in a sweat, going low was working my glutes and I could also feel my core working over time.
I’d say 100% of the time in any given Gymbox class, I'm always clock watching because of the ridiculous amount of burpees or pull-ups that we have to do, but this class was over in a blur and I can honestly say that I don’t remember the last time I had this much fun in a class.
So highly recommended for anyone who wants to brush up on their hip-shaking skills and work up a sweat while you’re at it.
