Holborn Dining Room, part of the capital's newest ultra-luxury hotel Rosewood London, is one of midtown's best-kept secrets, and the ideal post-workout dinner option. Members can now get in on the culinary action with a tasty 15% off. We sent in our social media girl Lulu Le Vay, after a calorie-busting spin session at Gymbox Holborn, to sample what was on offer. This is what she discovered.
After coming out of a body-busting, sweat-enducing spin session at Gymbox Holborn, the joy of going for dinner at the uber-chic, recently revamped British Brasserie Holborn Dining Room just over the road, was just the tonic. There’s no better feeling than peeling off your sweaty gear knowing you’ve worked out to your max, and getting all spruced up and donning a nice frock - ready for well-earned replenishment somewhere a bit shmancy.
Holborn Dining Room is a gem in the heart of what is now being called London’s ‘midtown’. The space has an air of Soho House with a waft of The Dean Street Townhouse - but with a more open and relaxed vibe. High ceilings, art-deco inspired fixtures with an American diner twist - the red leather banquettes are simply stunning - the design oozes contemporary classic, without trying too hard. Effortless chic.
Unlike many central London brasseries, the pace is relaxed from the moment you enter. Not being rushed to your table and feeling like part of that bums-on-seats turnover was refreshing. After a long day and a heavy workout there was nothing quite like unwinding at the bar and enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail, taking down the heart rate, catching up with a mate. It is, after all, OK to relax. The Bella cocktail was heaven in a glass - Courvoisier, Aperol, orgeat, Antica Formula (whatever that is!), and my friend’s classic Martini looked simply delish.
Our corner table matched the relaxed atmosphere - comfortable, informal - and the service was continually delivered with a smile and friendly banter. The menu boasts British classics with a twist including a variety of meat, veg and fish dishes, from crustacea and charcuterie through to the classic mixed grill and salads. For the paleos amongst you, there is definitely plenty to choose from. Oh, and on a hot summer's night, the new terrace is a must-go.
As my date was a Pescatarian, on advice from our waiter we opted for squid to start - beautifully tender and light - and the Bosworth Ash & red onion tart. This goat's cheese delicacy was nothing short of mouth-watering. For mains we shared the specials - wild salmon and grilled lobster, with sides of spinach and spring greens. Simple, good quality ingredients served with no fuss. Delicious. Like any dinner out, it’s not worth scrimping on the dessert. We work, and workout, too hard for that, and life is short - so we shared a Valrhona chocolate pot and raspberry & rose Eton mess, washed down with a Macchiato.
Without bias, this is undoubtedly one of my personal new favourite London dining spots. Relaxed atmosphere, fantastic food, friendly service. What more could you ask for?
