Liz Barker is not only the club manager at Gymbox Holborn, but she’s also one of our leading instructors, boxer for Fitzroy Lodge and general adrenalin junkie. We salute you Liz! You’re officially a Gymbox Original.
Hi Liz. You’ve been chosen as a Gymbox Original, how does that make you feel?
Retro! No, seriously, it’s really nice to know I’m a solid part of the Gymbox crew. Feels great.
In what ways do you think you are original?
I like to combine old tried and tested methods while researching and trying new training concepts. I also try and adapt training programs for my class participants so everyone gets a good session no matter what their athletic ability.
Do you think you and Gymbox have a good synergy working together?
Yes, I’d say so. I’ve been part of of Gymbox for two-and-a-half years now, and I couldn’t think of another chain fitness brand I’d rather work for.
What do you think gives Gymbox - and you - the edge over others?
Easy. Different approach, latest innovation and training methods.
You’re into extreme sports, tell us about that?
Yeah, I love the sea and mountains! I kite surf, wakeboard and snowboard, wakesurf and I just started rally driving!
You also teach spin, pilates, W.O.D, frame, gymboxing and UFC Fit - do you have a favourite?
I did my CrossFit Level 1 trainer course last year, and love my class. They work so hard, and I love seeing people achieve things they didn’t think were possible. Each week I beast them, and they come back for more!
Are you an adrenalin junkie? What gives you the biggest high?
Yes, but can I have two one each season? Winter is snowboarding and summer is kitesurfing.
You’ve been a GM at Gymbox for over two years - do you have a favourite club?
I started at Bank, then moved to Westfield, and have been at Holborn since November last year. I’ve enjoyed all of them so much, but I love Holborn where I am now, it’s the oldest and first club, and there’s a really good crowd of the original Gymboxers who still go there. That’s where it all started.
What have been the highlights for you so far?
The amazing and extraordinary people I have met. Too many to mention!
What is it about the job that gets you in every day?
Teaching is my favourite part of my job, no question. And being able to wear my sneakers to work, and to work out every day, is pretty amazing.
In what ways has fitness changed your life?
I’ve always been into fitness and sport, but Gymbox got me into boxing. Since I’ve boxed I’ve been the fittest I’ve ever been. Not only that, boxing has become an incredible and such an important part of my life - it’s given me so many opportunities I never imagined was possible. My boxing career has only just started really.
What have been the key challenges that you’ve had to overcome?
Getting up at 5:00am to start work!
