Kristjana Saeunn, 23, is originally from Iceland and a member of Gymbox Old Street. She ended her gymnastics' career by winning a gold medal for her Icelandic team at the European Championships. She moved to London to study fashion at UAL. We meet her.
Welcome to Gymbox Old Street, how do you like it so far?
I like it, there is everything you need for a perfect gym there. Great equipment, great atmosphere!
You’re from Iceland, what made you move here?
I decided that 2012 would be my last competition in gymnastics, so I wanted to move somewhere else and study, and London was my first choice. I started gymnastics at a very young age and I guess, as a very active child. When I was 12 years-old I started competing for Iceland's national team.
You’ve won a gold medal for gymnastics, tell us about that?
I won several gold medals in Iceland and around the world. The training was very strict, 4-5 hours a day, 6 times a week. 6-8 hours in the summer break. When I was 19 I lost my interest in artistic gymnastics and started doing team gym. Less hours and more fun I guess. All of a sudden every best artistic gymnast of my generation joined team gym and we made a hell of a good team. We competed in the European championships in 2010 and 2012 and won a gold medal both times.
How do the worlds of fitness and fashion work together?
I don't think fashion and training go well together for me. I work out to keep sane, to be healthy and to feel good. I like the fact that you don't have to be fashionable when you work out. I mean of course I think about what to wear, but I'm not putting on extra makeup before I go to the gym! Although I see girls doing that.
What does fitness bring to your life?
Because I've been so active from a very young age I think that training keeps me sane - If I don't train daily it will impact my mood, so training is like a part of my daily routine. It definitely makes me happy!
And fashion? What’s more important to you?
Because I look at fitness and fashion from a very different prospective it's hard to say which one is more important. I think that training is more like a thing that I do every day without thinking, but fashion is work.
What is your current training schedule?
I try to work out every day I take it day by day. Different times - different exercises. Because of my gymnast career it's very easy for me to gain muscles, so I try to do more cardio. I've recently discovered Ashtanga Yoga. I used to practise it a lot when I was younger but now as I'm older I have learnt to enjoy relaxing and meditation. I've now become a yoga addict!
Anything at Gymbox you’d like to try but haven’t yet?
Yes, loads! For example all the yoga classes. I've only been to Gymbox to train myself, so I'm going to try out the group classes soon. There are so many to choose from, it's fantastic.
What are you aspirations for the future?
I hope I will to be able to train as hard as I do now when I'm 70 years old. I want to finish college, work in the fashion business and live in Berlin and Copenhagen. Eat lots of amazing food, go to the theatre, concerts and travel as much as I can!
