Notting Hill Carnival Dance Guide!

Notting Hill Carnival Dance Guide!

You know what's up this weekend? That's right, it's Carnival! So, to help you get in the mood, Gymbox Ragga Dancehall queen Marissa Forrester is here to share her expertise, and help you practice those key moves. You ready?

Willie Bounce

This was created by Mr. Bogle, a tribute to friend and 'Black Roses' dance crew member, Willie Haggart. To 'Willie Bounce', you just rock your body from left to right. As you rock you tap your foot on each side. Then you add arms. Left arm up and then sway it from left to right. Do the same with the other arm, right to left. Extend the arms and keep your legs moving from left to right, right to left.

There are many types of wines, 'Gypsy' 'Tempa' 'Dutty' to name a few. But lets stick to the basic wine which never goes out of style. This one is all about hips! You can either move them fast or slow. Just make sure it's sexy! Bend your knees and get in a low squat - like position, this makes the move easier to do. Make sure you are comfortable. Now rotate your hips in a circular motion. Once you have got the hang of that, you can then rotate in a big circle, fast or slow. You can also add your arms or bend over with it. There are many ways to do it, so add your own flavour!

You may see many variations of this at Carnival this year, it's quite a feminine move. Simply stand with your legs apart and bend over as if you're going to touch your toes to stretch. In this position, you can now do a cute little shake or a sexy slow/fast wine. Get creative!

Summa Jam

Created by 'Black Eagles' dance crew. Stand with your legs apart (a little more than hip width). Bend your knees. Turn your right foot with your heel facing inward toward your body, turn it back out. Repeat on the other side. Return to the right foot, turn the foot with heel facing inward then back out. Do this twice on the right foot the second time. Keep doing this in a single, single, double double motion. Add arms and hands. As you turn your right foot inward, push your right arm across your body, in a circular motion and return to the right side of the body as the foot returns to its original position. Your hands are supposed to move at the same time as your feet, so repeat on the other side, with your palms facing away from your body.

Split Twerk

This is an advanced move, much harder than any other regular twerk or wine and requires you to have flexibility and strength! You may see some of the performers on a float at the Carnival doing this one! Make sure your muscle are warm and well stretched before doing this and do not repeatedly do this move, as you can strain muscles or damage your lower back). Start in a position with your dominate leg out. Support yourself by facing your palms down on the floor on each side of your legs. Now slide out into a split, on the side your most comfortable with. Keep both hands flat to aid your balance in the split. Bend your elbows slightly and use your arms to lift up keeping your back knee on the ground and then drop back down. Simples! Keep repeating and this is twerking in the split. For more challenge at a few booty pops when you lift up. And, don't worry of you can't get into a perfect split. As an alternative, you don't have to go all the way down. Place both arms on one side of your body, palms facing the ground for support, with your back knee on the ground, here you can still rise up and pop in a way that looks good.
