Class review – Ultimate Fit

Sophie Kay of Fitology searched out a challenge in the form of Ultimate Fit, which is a fast-paced, high-intensity, MMA inspired workout that mimics the pace of an MMA competition fight. Expect wrestling fitness drills in a HIIT format. "Give it a go, you won’t regret it!" she says.

Let’s face it, we’ve all secretly fancied ourselves as a bit of a fitness champ at one point or another right? No? Just me then…

This class from Gymbox got me interested because I love to box, but the fitness required is something that always challenges me. Ultimate Fit promises to deliver ‘wrestling fitness drills in a hiit format’ – which is high intensity intrval training – but what does that really mean?

The class started by everyone grabbing a hexagonal mat, and we got stuck into a warm up consisting of low impact cardio and stretching moves. Looking around I didn’t think it was too intense at the beginning, but how wrong I was.

The instructor was a ball of muscle and energy. I started to feel the nerves when he explained that we’d be taking on 4 rounds of 4 exercises each with each round repeated twice, making 8 rounds in total. Shudder.

We got stuck straight into the first round and for the next 40 minutes it was a blur of moves, sweat and muscles burning. Every move came with an adaption to make it easier, or harder, which allowed everyone in the class to keep up and work at their own pace.

Each round included cardio-based moves, core exercises and a strength move like skier jumps with a knee thrust, plank twists to each side and press up burpees. We did each move for 30 seconds with no rest in between so very quickly the sweat was dripping.

Every time I thought I’d had enough the instructor came over and gave a word of encouragement which kept me going and spurred me on to work harder and harder. I really enjoyed the mix of more common circuit-type moves with the MMA-inspired exercises as it was a whole-body approach that worked on strength and endurance at the same time.

This class would be a brilliant companion to a running training plan as well as anyone looking to increase their cardio fitness and strength. Seriously, give it a go, you won’t regret it!
